M.A.R.S. 11TH ANNUAL CHARITY GIANT SCALE FUN FLY
Saturday May --, 2008 was the day of the Mars Airplane Recreational Society’s 11th Annual Giant Scale Charity Fun Fly at the club’s field located in Lancaster Township Butler County, PA.
The event is restricted to IMA legal aircraft. Aircraft had to be ¼ scale of a full scale aircraft, a non scale monoplane has to have a min wingspan of 80 inches and bi winged aircraft have to have a span of at least 60 inches.

The IMAA does not promote contest flying but rather a relaxed style of fun flying. Fly when your ready or don’t fly at all.
The weather cooperated with a blue sky filled with large white clouds. Temperatures were in the upper 60’s to lower 70’s. The only problem was a varying wind the changed from blowing up an down the runway to cross wind. Although this caused some pilots concern it did not stop at least two aircraft from being in the air at all times.
Twenty pilots were in attendance with at least twice that number of aircraft. The aircraft on the flight line ranged from a 102 inch P-47 to a Telemaster. There were several P-51 Mustangs, a P-38 Lighting, a P-61 Black Widow and two B-25’s were among the aircraft representing WW II. Two Fokker Dr 1’s represented the WW I era. The civilian sector was represented by Cubs and a number of aerobatic ships.
This event had a very relaxed atmosphere. When pilots were not flying their aircraft they were engaged along with spectators in hanger flying.

If you’re interested in relaxed giant scale flying make it a point to attend this event next year. It’ normally held the Saturday before Memorial Day. ~JN |
